What is Company Tax Return?
A Company Tax Return, also known as CT600 form, is reported by companies to show HMRC how much expenditure, profit or taxable total profits the business is generating. You must make a Company Tax Return for the company’s accounting period, which is 12 months after the end of the accounting period it covers. You must still send a tax return if your organisation is making a loss or has no corporation tax to pay. However, if you’re self-employed as a sole trader or partnership you do not need to send a Corporation Tax Return, but you must send a Self-Assessment Return instead.
It is important you submit your company tax return as accurately as possible and it must be done within the deadline. Failure to do so can lead your company into paying a lot of penalties and fees. The following penalties come into force if your tax return is not submitted on time:
- 1 day late: £100 penalty
- 3 months late: A further £100 penalty
- 6 months late: 10% of the unpaid amount (as estimated by HMRC)
- 12 months late: A further 10% of any unpaid tax
